Largest class ever graduates with college degree, diploma from Woodlawn

Woodlawn High - SUSLA Class of 2025 Graduates

In a landmark achievement for academic excellence and college readiness, 19 seniors from Woodlawn High School, also known as Woodlawn Leadership Academy, have graduated not only with their high school diplomas but also with associate degrees from Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA). This marks the largest cohort in the school’s history to accomplish this dual milestone.

These students participated in SUSLA’s Early College Program, an initiative designed to allow high school students to take college-level courses both online and on-campus, earning credits that count toward both high school and college graduation requirements. By attending classes daily on SUSLA’s campus, these students immersed themselves in a collegiate environment, gaining firsthand experience of college academics and campus life.

The Early College Program enables students to begin their college education while still in high school, providing a “jump start” on their college careers and preparing them for the challenges of higher education.

SUSLA’s Early College Program is structured to support motivated high school students in earning college credits through a combination of online and on-campus courses. Students in grades 9–12 are eligible to participate, provided they meet certain academic criteria, including a minimum GPA and standardized test scores. The program offers a range of courses, including general education and career technical education (CTE) courses, allowing students to explore various fields of study.

Credits earned through the program are applicable toward degrees at SUSLA and are generally transferable to other colleges and universities.

The success of these 19 students reflects the strong partnership between Woodlawn High School and Southern University at Shreveport. It also highlights the commitment of educators, counselors, and families in supporting students through this rigorous academic path. By completing both high school and college requirements simultaneously, these graduates have set a new standard for academic achievement in the Shreveport community.

“You’ve shattered expectations, raised the bar, and opened doors for those coming behind you. Your story is living proof that where you come from does not define where you’re going,” SUSLA shared via their Facebook page. “Thank you for making our school proud. Keep leading. Keep pushing. And never forget who you are.”

As these students move forward, they carry with them not only diplomas and degrees but also the experience and confidence gained from navigating college-level coursework. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to future students and a testament to the opportunities available through dedicated early college programs.
